A warm welcome to my website!
I'm Carrie, a licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC) in Southern Maine. I became a counselor for numerous reasons, but foremost because I know that counseling works. I believe every human should be given the opportunity to not only survive- but thrive- in this one life we have.
I have many years experience working primarily with children in the educational and non-profit sectors- as a teacher of visual arts, a facilitator of programs that empower girls and women, an educator in special education and day treatment programs, and a child and family yoga instructor. All of these experiences were stepping stones to fully involve myself in the service of guiding others to create change by their own power and methods.
Why 'Nurtured Ground'? Nurture is defined as "care for and encourage the growth and development of", and Ground is defined as "the solid surface of the earth".
The earth and its ground hold so many nourishing lessons for us, if we are open to acknowledging them. We can nurture our awareness of the collective and connected ground underneath our own feet, as well as within our bodies, wherever we may walk or rest, so that in times of struggle and hopelessness there is built-in support we can rely on.
Nurture gets lost in the shuffle of everyday living once we are no longer infants, and have the desire and ability to learn to do things for ourselves. Nurturing ourselves is a progressive skill and way of being, learned through getting nurtured by others. We NEED nurturing by others, in many forms, to discover who we are and how we want to be in the world, and so we can learn to nurture ourselves. Yet in the society we find ourselves in, the tendency to get nurtured and supported when we need it most, like in times of distress, falls away too soon. Independence is valued, and dependence on others is viewed as weak, well before we are developmentally able to care for all aspects of ourselves on our own. We feel a loss of support and increased demand to attempt to fill in the gaps of what we are no longer provided. Over time, we feel we cannot measure up to expectations, and begin taking in doses of shame and fear each time we fall short. We internalize voices and messages from others that tell us we are not "enough", even when well-meaning. We develop defenses, patterns, beliefs and coping mechanisms that are conducive to surviving- not thriving.
The AMAZING thing is that through nurture, we can learn new skills and patterns, and change our perceptions, beliefs and behaviors to work with our true nature instead of against it, creating our own nurtured ground to hold us up. We are built to survive, and we have the power to choose if that will lead to thriving.
I align strongly with a person-centered approach, allowing my clients to feel safe and comfortable in their own time to do the hard work of creating change. I value being authentic, present, and fully accepting, 'flaws' and all. I reflect on many theories, as I come to understand my clients' experiences and uniqueness, including those that accentuate physiology, neurology, attachment theory, cognition and behavior. I work from a strengths-based perspective, and incorporate positive psychology.
In essence, I believe there is no one, two, or even three ways to understand and treat human psychological conditions. With new science consistently emerging, this is a fascinating time to utilize new methods.
Depending on the client's preference or interest, I use a combination of talk therapy, expressive art, sand tray, play therapy, somatic based treatment, and mindfulness.
Individual work- I work with children, teens, and adults, on an individual basis. With children and teens, the work involves some parent collaboration and partnering.
My clients are searching for support with anxiety, depressive moods, trauma, relationship issues, school/work related issues, grief and loss, maladaptive behaviors, overwhelm, neurodivergent understanding, chronic illness, and more.
Groups- I will be offering support and parenting groups beginning in the fall of 2024. Please see my current/upcoming offerings below.
My office is located directly off Route 295 in the Bayside neighborhood of Portland, with easy access from the Back Cove/Eastern Prom walking and biking path, and Metro bus routes.
Currently, the only insurance I accept is MaineCare, which I have limited openings for. For all other clients, my fee is $120 for a 60 minute session. I offer a sliding scale for those who find the full cost prohibitive to attaining care. If you have other insurance, I can give you a "superbill" of services provided and paid for, which you can submit to your insurance. Depending on your plan, costs may be at least partially reimbursed by your insurer.
Call or email to see about openings.
